The love story of Assol and Arthur Gray is truly amazing and romantic. The story “Scarlet Sails” begins its story long before the first meeting of the two main characters. There, on the banks of the river, a dreamy girl, under mysterious circumstances, meets the wizard and song collector Aegle, who either jokingly or seriously predicts the fate of the girl - she will grow up and meet a handsome prince who will marry her and take with her. No one believed in this, except Assol herself, but this happened.
It so happened that one day, far in the future from that meeting of Assol with the wizard, not far from the very town where all the events take place, a bored prince named Arthur Gray is on his ship. For twelve days he is anchored near the lighthouse near Lys and he is overcome by terrible longing, the cause of which he does not know. His ship bears the romantic name “Secret”, and his subordinates have a servant and part-time friend Letik. And so, to save himself from longing, he calls Letika and offers him to go fishing. They take a boat and go along the shore, fishing. Then they approach the shore and make a bonfire to have dinner with the caught fish. Gray is still thoughtful, his sadness does not pass. As a result, he falls asleep by the fire and sleeps there all night. At dawn, the prince suddenly wakes up and finds himself in a beautiful place, he is fascinated by the beauty of the local nature. He goes for a walk and on a walk he suddenly sees a sleeping girl. Amazed and discouraged by this picture, he sneaks up to her and looks at it. He really liked this girl and, obeying some inexplicable feeling, Gray puts the girl on his little finger his ring, and then goes unnoticed.
Then Gray meets his servant and they are sent back to the ship. The prince does not stop thinking about a sleeping girl from the forest. He orders to turn his ship towards the town of Caperna. There, the prince and the servant find the nearest tavern and ask the locals if anyone knows this girl. They are told the story that this girl in the city is considered by everyone to be crazy, crazy. And they even call her the nickname “Ship Assol”. The innkeeper tells Gray a story about scarlet sails, and about the wizard-collector of songs, and how hopelessly Assol has been waiting for his happiness for the past year.
At this very time, Assol herself accidentally passes by the tavern and Gray once again admires her, amazed how beautiful she is. One glance at her is enough for the prince to realize that she is not crazy. Meanwhile, in the tavern they see how the prince is interested in the fate of these girls and a real wave of gossip and gossip flares up in the town about what will happen next. The prince leaves, leaving the servant in the tavern, further inquiring about the girl, and he sets off for the harbor.
Further, the play moves to the morning of the next day, where we see Assol sitting with a book in her hands. The little bug, which flies to her page, hinders her from concentrating on reading every now and then. She throws him off, but the annoying little bug flies in and flies back. By chance, she looks up from the book and suddenly sees red sails in the sea. She screams, then jumps up in surprise, does not believe her eyes and cries with joy. With all her strength, she runs toward the scarlet sails, to the sea.
Meanwhile, in a small town everyone is talking only about her and red sails. Men speak nervously and gloomily, women with anger and envy. When Assol reaches the coast, a crowd of citizens awaits her. Seeing her, the crowd falls silent and parted. Assol notices that a ship with red sails has already anchored off the coast and a small boat has sailed from it, on which Gray stood with a smile and looked at the girl. Assol does not believe that this is in reality, it seems to her that she is in a dream. Music plays and she runs into the water towards the prince. The next instant, she was already in Gray’s boat, hugging his belt and, not remembering herself, happily set off for The Secret in it. On the ship, she asks the prince to let her take her father with him, and the prince permits her that. Assol is completely happy, Gray kisses Assol firmly and the holiday begins on the ship. So ends the story “Scarlet Sails”, and begins the love story of Assol and Arthur Gray.
